I'm going to rebuild my site with XHTML too. Tables are bad but the are the only way to kee the layout as you want (of course the were the only way until XHTML). The "weight" of the web site bulid with XHTML is usualy 2-3 times smaller, surfer gets its webpage faster, you pay smaller bandwith bills.
